Australia's fastest national mobile broadband speeds now available around Wollongong, Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven areas

15th December 2009

Telstra has announced that residents and businesses would benefit from faster mobile speeds following the upgrade of the Next G™ network around Wollongong and surrounding areas.  Earlier this year Next G™ network speeds increased using enhanced High Speed Packet Access technology (HSPA+) to make the network Australia’s fastest national mobile broadband network.

Telstra Country Wide® Area General Manager for Illawarra, Pat Nolan said customers in Wollongong and surrounding areas can now benefit from super-fast speeds following this upgrade to the local Next G™ network[1].

“This region’s Next G™ network upgrade is part of Telstra’s investment in world-leading technology and high-bandwidth backhaul, which combine to form the foundation for current and future network speed improvements, and high-bandwidth demand. “The upgrade means customers will experience the best mobile broadband speeds available when using devices like the BigPond/Telstra Elite™ USB Mobile Card on the Next G™ network.

“To put this in perspective, this will mean that with the BigPond/Telstra Elite USB Mobile Card in all capitals and selected regional areas, including Wollongong, you can download a whole lot faster, with a 30 minute TV episode in as little as 5 minutes[2], a 4MB BigPond® song in as little as seven seconds and games and ring tones (less than 2MB) literally in just seconds[3],” Pat said.

“Telstra’s Next G™ network is Australia’s largest and fastest mobile broadband network, offering nearly three times the coverage area of any of our competitors,” Mr Nolan said.

Claude Rafin, Managing Director of INS Health Care, welcomed the announcement of increased speeds and coverage around Wollongong and surrounding areas, and said this would greatly improve business productivity.

“We’re very excited about what this will mean for our new LEHMS Mobile Health Care Management System, which relies on Telstra’s Next G™ network,” said Claude, adding “LEHMS allows community care workers to manage the care of community and facility based patients, record and report clinical data to doctors and other health professionals, and also provides a mobile Personal Emergency Alarm System. Our care workers use this device in Wollongong, but also in more remote areas in the Southern Highlands, so having the best possible coverage and data transmission speeds is very important. Telstra’s continued investment in mobile and wireless services in regional Australia is to be commended.”

In the last 12 months, Telstra has expanded the breadth and depth of the Next G™ network coverage in the region by completing 6 new sites. This has further bolstered coverage performance on the Next G™ network in the region.

Since launch, more than 1,700 new Next G™ sites have been added to the network, improving existing coverage and performance. Nationally more than 270 new or improved Next G™ network sites are scheduled for completion by the end of this financial year.
