Hospitalisation Due to Falls is on the Rise
The number of older Australians hospitalised after a fall is rising, according to a report released 1st June 2012 by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The report, Hospitalisations due to falls in older people , shows there were 78,600 hospitalised injury cases due to falls in people aged 65 years and over in 2008-09. “This was 4,000 more cases than in 2007-08”, AIHW spokesperson, Professor James Harrison, said.
Our General Assessment service can help reduce the risk.
INS offers a General Assessment service aimed at illness and falls prevention, with strategies in place to help prevent or reduce hospital admissions. A comprehensive in-home assessment by a Registered Nurse, experienced in community care, can assist in several ways.
- The Nurse conducts a general assessment, reviewing the person’s blood pressure, mobility, eyesight, hearing, etc., identifying any potential causes of falls, e.g. infection or poor mobility, and providing education on ways to minimise risk
- A Health & Safety Assessment of the home is conducted, which can identify:
- Areas of the home that pose a fall risk
- Clutter, dust or mildew that may be a risk for those with allergies, asthma, COPD or other respiratory conditions
- Beds, toilets and chairs that are either too high or too low
- Medications are reviewed, including herbal and home remedies that people often neglect or forget to mention in the hospital
